Question by tepishane: Please tell me what you think of this short story….?
The prompt is: The past. This story is just a first draft so please feel free to criticize me. I’ll appreciate Constructive criticisms… Thanks so much!

“Gum Wrapper Sculpture: A New Year’s Treat”

I still remember the time when little girls still played with paper dolls…when the typewriter seemed to be the greatest thing ever…and when I still walked around our village in pajamas…

It was another cold New Year’s Eve and I just came back from arguing with our neighbor the J.H. Store saleslady again. “Home!” I shouted to our maid Lisa as I took off my scarf and tossed it to the sofa.

“Where’s the egg? I need it now. The pan’s already smoking, you know.” She said, “What took you so long?”

“The dum saleslady didn’t want to give my change back. She told me that I didn’t have any,”

“Uhmm…How much did the egg cost?”

“A penny.”

“Well, how much did you give her?”

“A penny. Why?”

She laughed at me. I didn’t even know why. “If you give her the exact amount, you don’t get anything back,” she explained.

I didn’t understand what she was talking about so I just nodded, “Okay… But she still didn’t give me my change back!”

After Lisa decided that teaching me her jargon was impossible, the conversation was over and it was time to eat. We had the usual omelet-French toast-orange juice breakfast with a little bit of my specialty—mango float.

“Sweets for breakfast?” My dad said, “Wow! This is great!” And he kissed me right on the forehead.

“Yes. Lisa helped me make it again yesterday and I wanted to know what you think.” I excitedly said. “I also saved some for dinner.”

Mom and my little brother John also agreed. “Hmmm… It’s suparcalifajisticespalido-shoes!” he exclaimed.

After we ate, Dad was dancing all over the house while holding a small package wrapped with gold Christmas foil. My brother and I joined in too and did the ‘Funny Dance’ together. Then, just as we were about to sit down from exhaustion, Mom took out a swan-figured thing from the box. “It’s a New Year’s treat,” she lovingly whispered.

John and I examined it closer: the whole thing was made of gum wrapper; every bit of it was placed on top of the other. Though, the figure wasn’t origami nor paper Maché; it was better—a ‘Gum Wrapper sculpture.’ There were a lot of questions after that. ‘How was it made?’ ‘Where did it come from?’ and most importantly, ‘Who made it?’

“Actually, that’s not the treat.” Dad said, “We’re going to take you to the one who made this. He can teach you…” When we heard that, my brother and I were like monkeys, yelling and screaming and running around the house.

So Mom and Dad blindfolded and guided us monkeys to the Volk’s Wagon. It wasn’t long before we reached our destination.

uhhmm.. I know some of the characters still need “CHARACTER” so I’ll work on that. : )

Families need trouble too… even on a new year’s eve. It’s not like there’s a perfect family, right?

thanks again! Only need suggestions….
Uhhmm… no, you’re not. It still doesn’t have an ending. This is just the begginging. sorry…

Loved it!
Great use of paragraphs, the short ones gave it good emotion and meaning. The last sentence could be changed to something a bit more…well…better. The whole story is so good it could end a bit better i suppose. Maybe add a simile or two as well?

What do you think? Answer below!
